At F. Milford and Sons we take great pride in our role as a local, family-run wholesaler. As part of this, we are proud to work closely with West Country producers, delivering their goods to our customers every day.
In the South West, we have a lot of fantastic fruit and vegetable growers and dairy product suppliers. We work closely with them to ensure that the products we sell are the best quality and delicious. And whenever possible, we use our vast supply network in the West Country to source our products, as this cuts down on food miles ensuring that our fruit and vegetables reach us as fresh and delicious as when they were picked.
There are many benefits to buying produce that has been grown in the West Country. As well as supporting local businesses and the economy of the South West, buying local also means that you’re eating produce that is in season and at its best.
The rise of the supermarket, with their year-round availability of fruit and vegetables, may have reduced the perception of seasonality, but there has recently been a surge in consumers desire to know where their food is coming from. This has led restaurants to highlight their use of locally sourced foods on their menus, and we’re happy to be able to supply the restaurants and cafes that buy from us with the best West Country produce available.
From small cafes and restaurants, to bigger establishments such as schools and universities, F. Milford and Sons deliver fresh produce to our customers every day, no matter what their size.
We’re proud to be supporting West Country producers and supplying our customers with the best seasonal produce available. Here is an update from Milford’s about the great local produce that we have available right now.
Savoy cabbage is now very very short and when it does come in it is in 8’s not 12’s.
Primo cabbage is still not of the quality we are happy to buy.
Very little spring green available and broccoli is still very very pricey.
Still good local potatoes, leeks, cauliflower, turnips, swede and parsnips – so a good warming stew is still excellent value.
Daffodils have now sadly finished.
Hot Cross Buns are available as are saffron cakes as we head closer to Easter.
We also have the full range of bread rolls for all those Easter morning breakfast baps. Please ask if you would like more details on our bread range.
Local rhubarb is very plentiful for a lovely warming crumble on a cold day like this.
We have some locally ‘sprung’ Devonia water in attractive glass bottles – both small and large bottles and both still and sparking – looks lovely on a white linen table cloth for a nice Easter meal or even as a refreshing drink along with a spring day picnic.
We have some processing mushrooms available at £1 pre tray.
We will be sharing our Easter opening times later on in the week.
If you have any questions or you would like to any more information or details about what we have mentioned then please do not hesitate to contact us on 01392 274 035.

Milford’s, as a local family fruit and vegetable wholesaler, has adapted a lot during our 120 years of business. With the emergence of major supermarkets and the sharp decline of the traditional high street shop, we have revised our approach and learned how to navigate these new waters; finding alternative businesses to supply with our local and West Country produce.
In the last 20 years, our supply to restaurants, schools, universities, colleges and other public bodies has increased tenfold, which meant that we have had to gain new accreditation to ensure that we are up to date with the relevant food legislation.
To make sure that we were operating to a legal standard, ten years ago we sought advice from Business Link about how to get the right accreditation; we then proceeded to work towards and achieve the ISO 9001 Accreditation, which is an internationally recognised UKAS accredited quality system.
We held this for nine years, then in the last 2 years we have moved over to STS approval in accordance with the Code of Practice and Technical Standard for Food Processors and Suppliers to the Public Sector, which is a more relevant standard to our industry and is recognised throughout the public sector we are serving.
This standard has been developed to cover all activities which may affect food safety, quality and legality of products being manufactured, stored and/or dispatched.
The standard covers food safety quality and legality for food products, which may be:
Manufacture of ingredients for further processing
Manufacture of finished products
Manufacture of part prepared products e.g. cook-chill, souse vide, cook freeze
Warehousing of products, ambient, chill and frozen
Storage and dispatch of own products
Storage and dispatch of product produced by others
The scope covered by this standard is for all food product commodities that may be purchased, utilised and consumed within public sector operations, for example, hospitals, schools, care homes, local authority premises. This is reviewed and audited annually to make sure we are working to the required standard.
With such measures in place, our customers can rest assured, knowing that we are working to the highest standards and continually ensuring that we have the most relevant accreditation within our industry.
