Milford and Son’s started in 1908 as a family-run local grocer, a tradition that continues to this day.
Cousins Steve Hawley and Paul Milford began their F. Milford’s careers running the grocer’s market stall in Exeter back in the 1980’s. They have since risen within the company and are now Director’s, sourcing the best fruit and vegetables from South West suppliers for our customers and ensuring that our food safety standards remain high.
Through the years, we have expanded from a small fruit and vegetable shop in Paul street to a wholesaler based in Marsh Barton, but something that hasn’t changed is our values.
We work with many South West suppliers, getting our fruit and vegetables delivered to us from as close as possible to ensure that they are the best quality and freshness for our customers.
And, our produce isn’t the only thing that we source locally, we also buy our stationery and sundries from other local companies in and around Exeter.
We always either reuse our produce boxes or donate them to other local businesses who can make use of them.
We support many local charities and events, including Force Cancer Charity bike ride.
Our values underpin everything that we do at F. Milford’s, and as well as helping the local economy and community, they also help us reduce our carbon footprint and make us more environmentally friendly, something that is important to us as a local grocer.

At F. Milford and Son’s, we have a great selection of fresh fruit and vegetables that we deliver to local businesses in Exeter and surrounding Devon towns and villages every day. Asparagus has now come into season, which means that we have just started delivering it to our customers.
Asparagus is a great vegetable as it is full of vitamins and minerals; it contains high levels of vitamins A and C, as well as potassium, iron and calcium, which are all essential for a healthy lifestyle.
It also has different characteristics depending on where it was grown; English asparagus is green, French is purple and Spanish is white, because it is grown beneath the soil. English asparagus is usually grown between May-July, but we can source it as early as February and as late as September from our supplier in the Wye Valley.
At Milford’s we source our asparagus from two different suppliers; the one in the Wye Valley and one from the Vale of Evesham.
An interesting fact about asparagus is that it can grow up to 10 cm per day, some people have even claimed that they can hear the shoots growing.
There are lots of different ways that you can enjoy it; you could bake it in a tart, have it as a side with some salmon or even your Sunday roast. Asparagus is also great in risottos, salads, pasta dishes and stir-fries – we’re happy to talk about recipes with customers at any time!
Alternatively, if you would like to talk to us about a delivery of our delicious asparagus in Devon, then contact us today to discuss your needs with us.
Here is an update from Milford’s about the great local produce that we have available right now.
Savoy cabbage is now very very short and when it does come in it is in 8’s not 12’s.
Primo cabbage is still not of the quality we are happy to buy.
Very little spring green available and broccoli is still very very pricey.
Still good local potatoes, leeks, cauliflower, turnips, swede and parsnips – so a good warming stew is still excellent value.
Daffodils have now sadly finished.
Hot Cross Buns are available as are saffron cakes as we head closer to Easter.
We also have the full range of bread rolls for all those Easter morning breakfast baps. Please ask if you would like more details on our bread range.
Local rhubarb is very plentiful for a lovely warming crumble on a cold day like this.
We have some locally ‘sprung’ Devonia water in attractive glass bottles – both small and large bottles and both still and sparking – looks lovely on a white linen table cloth for a nice Easter meal or even as a refreshing drink along with a spring day picnic.
We have some processing mushrooms available at £1 pre tray.
We will be sharing our Easter opening times later on in the week.
If you have any questions or you would like to any more information or details about what we have mentioned then please do not hesitate to contact us on 01392 274 035.

We are very excited to be attending the 2017 Source Trade Show again this year, which takes place on the 8-9th February at Westpoint Exhibition Centre. Registration for the Show is free and there is no charge at all for trade buyers to attend.
The Show is a great time for local food and drink producers and service providers to exhibit their products to new customers, as well as returning customers.
We are looking forward to showcasing some of our great quality fresh fruit and vegetables, talking to customers face-to-face about our company and how we source many of our produce from local producers and the South West.
It is a great opportunity for us to show customers, first hand, the great quality produce that they can expect to get from us every time they put in an order, as well as talk to them about the different ranges of products that we offer.
We look forward to meeting other traders and producers, along with new and returning customers at the Show. If you would like to come and talk to us, we will be on stand G54. We hope to see you there.
Milford’s, as a local family fruit and vegetable wholesaler, has adapted a lot during our 120 years of business. With the emergence of major supermarkets and the sharp decline of the traditional high street shop, we have revised our approach and learned how to navigate these new waters; finding alternative businesses to supply with our local and West Country produce.
In the last 20 years, our supply to restaurants, schools, universities, colleges and other public bodies has increased tenfold, which meant that we have had to gain new accreditation to ensure that we are up to date with the relevant food legislation.
To make sure that we were operating to a legal standard, ten years ago we sought advice from Business Link about how to get the right accreditation; we then proceeded to work towards and achieve the ISO 9001 Accreditation, which is an internationally recognised UKAS accredited quality system.
We held this for nine years, then in the last 2 years we have moved over to STS approval in accordance with the Code of Practice and Technical Standard for Food Processors and Suppliers to the Public Sector, which is a more relevant standard to our industry and is recognised throughout the public sector we are serving.
This standard has been developed to cover all activities which may affect food safety, quality and legality of products being manufactured, stored and/or dispatched.
The standard covers food safety quality and legality for food products, which may be:
Manufacture of ingredients for further processing
Manufacture of finished products
Manufacture of part prepared products e.g. cook-chill, souse vide, cook freeze
Warehousing of products, ambient, chill and frozen
Storage and dispatch of own products
Storage and dispatch of product produced by others
The scope covered by this standard is for all food product commodities that may be purchased, utilised and consumed within public sector operations, for example, hospitals, schools, care homes, local authority premises. This is reviewed and audited annually to make sure we are working to the required standard.
With such measures in place, our customers can rest assured, knowing that we are working to the highest standards and continually ensuring that we have the most relevant accreditation within our industry.
F. Milford and Sons may have started in 1908 as a small fruit shop in Paul Street, but over the years we have grown and expanded into one of Exeter’s biggest, local grocers. Our range now goes much further than just fruit and vegetables; we have dry goods, dairy products and more available.
As we have expanded, one thing has always remained the same – our dedication to sourcing the best ingredients and products. We are constantly on the look-out for the greatest products to supply to our customers; whether that is locally produced gluten-free bread and cakes or internationally renowned tea and coffee.
We source many of our products from as close to Exeter as possible; this saves on food miles, supports other local businesses and makes sure that our products are as fresh as possible. We believe that this sets us apart from other businesses; working with local suppliers ensures that our customers only get the best produce.
Our reputation within Exeter, as a wholesaler that works closely with suppliers and producers in the South West, is one that we are proud of. We prioritise local produce, and try and source as much of it from as close to Exeter as possible.
But our West Country connections don’t stop there – we also have a great selection of cheeses (including blue cheese and camembert), eggs and milk which are all produced in the South West.
Our selection of fresh, delicious bread is also not to be missed. We have many different types available; from thick-cut white loaves, crusty bloomers and bread rolls – we cater to all tastes and requirements. Our range of bread is supported by our gluten-free range, which includes bread and cakes, and are all available to order today.
We even have a great range of dry goods; including nuts, dried fruit and spices; everything you need to create delicious dishes and desserts. All sourced from, mostly family-run suppliers, West country suppliers.
From our beginnings as a small fruit shop, we’ve developed into Exeter’s local grocer – offering much more than just fruit and vegetables. Give us a call today if there is something which you would like to order from us, or to discuss what we have available.
Here at F. Milford and Sons, we work with a lot of different fresh fruit and vegetables throughout the year; as the seasons change so does our produce. Right now, apples are at the core, with many different varieties coming into season during the Autumn months. Therefore, what better time to introduce one of our main local apple suppliers, Four Elms Fruit Farm which can be found just 12 miles outside of Exeter.
Four Elms Fruit Farm is currently in its third generation of family ownership. It was established over 90 years ago and has been successfully run by the Smedley family since the early 1960’s. It is safe to say that they are experts in their field; growing 14 varieties of apples on their 70-acre farm including, Cox, Egremont Russet, Bramley, Braeburn and Gala. They also produce delicious Real Devonshire Apple Juice for which they have won multiple awards; this year they were awarded gold medals from Taste of the West for their Cox/Bramley, Cox and Russet juices, all of which we stock.
Four Elms takes a lot of pride in supporting the environment and is an ambassador for the ‘East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. As well as this, Mark Smedley has over 10 thriving bee hives on the farm, which are helping to re-establish honey bee numbers in the UK. The honey which is produced by the bees is sold in their shop, The Apple Shed, which can be found on their farm. There are also numerous owls and bats which live in boxes which have been specially put up around the farm.
If you would like more information about the different Four Elms products that we stock, then please contact us today and we will be happy to talk to you about them and take your order.
